In the making

Aileen Kelly - ITM Catch Up

We recently caught up with rising soul artist Aileen Kelly, following her performance at the Brighton stop of the ITM Presents UK Tour. After joining ITM Presents’ artist development programme in 2023, she has continued to grow as both a musician and performer, collaborating with acclaimed artists and working closely with the ITM team.

With a sound rooted in timeless soul, blues and vintage influences, her music blends warmth, authenticity and nostalgia. In this interview, she shares her journey with ITM Presents, the inspiration behind her music, her favourite Flare Audio gear, and what fans can expect from her upcoming album Maiden Voyage.

..............
How did you get involved with ITM Presents, and what does their support mean to you as an artist?
..............

I got involved with ITM presents, back in 2023 after applying to their artist development program.

The year-long project was honestly amazing, we recorded a few tracks and I collaborated with Cassell the Beatmaker, Liam Bailey, Joy Farrukh & Eric Appapoulay.

We attended the Ivor Awards which was a special experience, and also put on a live showcase! I have continued to work alongside the ITM team on music, shows and recently our UK tour! They are an amazing group of people and have helped me develop as an artist and individual over the last few years!

..............
How would you describe your sound or musical style to someone hearing you for the first time?
..............

I would describe my sound as soulful, warm, raw and authentic. As an artist I aspire to make timeless music, music that you can’t pinpoint to a period of time, I want my music to have a nostalgic feel to it, to remind people of a different time.

I am heavily influenced by the iconic songstresses & powerhouses of the 20th century, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone. I am also largely influenced by Prince, D’Angelo, Donny Hathaway & Otis Redding to name a few.

..............
We loved seeing you at the Brighton show on the ITM Tour! What is your most memorable moment from the show?
..............

The Brighton show was so much fun, it was our first night so I was definitely feeling the nerves, but it went so well and there was such a lovely crowd! The venue ‘Alphabet’ was absolutely gorgeous and I loved performing there!

One of my most memorable moments was probably before the show in the green room, hanging out with the whole ITM crew. It was proper cosy with armchairs and lamps and it felt like being in your granny’s living room! We had some great chats, it was a really nice feeling after everyone’s hard work in the lead up to the tour to have made it to the first night!

..............
Who or what inspires your music the most right now?
..............

At the moment I have been listening to quite a lot of blues, and have been taking inspiration and influence from elements of simplicity and predictability of quite a lot of blues music! I love the familiar patterns that shape the blues and I am working on ideas based around these elements!

..............
Performing live can be intense. How do you prepare mentally and physically for a show?
..............

I usually like to have a bit of quiet time to myself before performing, I am a very chatty person and love being around people, but before going out on stage I need some time to gather my thoughts, calm my nerves and go through the show in my head!

..............
What is your favourite Flare product, and how does it fit into your daily routine as a musician?
..............

My favorite flare product is the Flare Studio wired headphones. I use them everyday for listening to music, songwriting, going over mixes and chatting on the phone! I definitely feel lost without them, I love listening to my music when I’m walking to work or at the gym. The sound quality is amazing and I love listening to my own music through these headphones as I can hear all the layers and harmonies really clearly and the sound is really crisp!

..............
What’s one song of yours that you think best represents who you are as an artist and why?
..............

I think one of the songs that shows my true colors as an artist is ‘seeds you sow’ the song is about hope, optimism and positivity, the song is inspired by the journey of growth of a seed into a flower, a lyric from the song is ‘you will nurture and grow something beautiful’. The song is about patience, trusting the process and keeping an open mind. The most prominent line of the song for me is ‘take your time to discover and find all the treasures of life, open your eyes’.

..............
What’s next for you? Any other exciting projects or goals on the horizon?
..............

am very excited to say that I will be releasing my album in March! The Album is called ‘Maiden Voyage’ and it’s the first I have released in years! The project is in collaboration with Cassell the Beatmaker who produced the album! I am really excited for it to be out in the world, it will also be available on CD and vinyl!
