Miss Lilly - ITM Catch Up
The founder of ITM is actually my dad. Seeing how passionate he is about giving upcoming artists opportunities and a path into the industry at the start of their journey is really inspiring. Understanding the necessity for programmes like In the making is crucial to me and the whole ITM team.
It’s not just a bonus for upcoming artists, it’s essential! Personally the support from In the making has allowed me to be a part of a UK tour very early on into my music career. Performing my music to a live audience felt electric and something I’m endlessly grateful to have experienced.
The motivation behind my music is to make someone dance. If someone can listen to my music and have the urge to dance that’s a huge success for me. I make all of my music with my brother (Cassell Beats). He makes the beat and I write the lyrics and melody. We don’t put a genre on anything we make but we acknowledge that all our influences of music we were exposed to growing up always finds its way into our music. Whether that’s reggae, rare groove, new jack swing, lovers rock, garage, old school r&b the list honestly goes on and on.
My most memorable moment from the tour was definitely performing my unreleased track “Poster girl” and seeing how it resonated in all the different cities. I also enjoyed performing that song because the band put a rock spin on it which was really cool. On the actual track there is more of a hint of rock but that was really brought to the forefront on the stage. I loved it.
When I write a song I tend to build a world around it and expand the feelings and lyrics of the song into another world. I’m a very visual person so I draw the cover art for all my music and that really helps me capture the world where this song insists in my head and share that with everyone listening. In terms of music, my brother and I have a lot of the same music that we have a deep connection with, but we also have different things that we enjoy individually. Bringing that understanding and individuality together naturally really helps things feel fresh and new for us when we are making music.
Always make sure I do a practice run of the set in my boots because they have a heel on them and I am not a heels person!! A little practice run in them is great so I know I won’t fall over on stage lol. For the London show I was the most nervous I’ve been for anything in a very long time. I listened to a guided meditation that was talking about the best possible outcome for everything. That really helped me feel a little bit more grounded and slightly more calm. I’m still very new to performing my own music live so I’m still learning my own techniques for this thing.
My favourite flare product is definitely the Flare studio earphones. I wore them for every show on the ITM tour and they were amazing. The sound quality was so good. I had never used in-ears in my stage performances before so I was nervous to use them at first but I knew I could trust the flare earphones after the first use.
The song that represents who I am as an artist right now is definitely my unreleased song called “Poster girl”. It’s about being exactly who you are and not who people want you to be. It’s freeing and pushes back on societal constructs. We are all different and that’s what is meant to be celebrated. The world would be boring if we all wanted to be the same.
A whole bunch of music is next for me!! I’ve only released one song not too long ago called “Runaway”. There’s a lot more exciting stuff to come, trust me!
