Meet Coral, a Zoology student who recently embarked on a marine conservation expedition to Mexico with Operation Wallacea. From conducting surveys on local vegetation, to monitoring sea turtles, Coral talks us through her expedition.

My expedition to Mexico was an incredible opportunity to combine my passion for marine life with conservation research. I was surrounded by coral reefs and turtles while learning what it’s really like to carry out marine conservation research in the field.

The first week was mainly focused on learning and building our identification and survey skills. We covered fish identification, coral identification, fish transect lines and coral quadrats. The second week was mainly focused on turtle research. I helped collect data on the number of turtles present within restricted areas, which could then be compared with the data we were collecting on seagrass during our surveys.

With such a long journey and busy days on the expedition, having equipment that helped me rest and stay comfortable was really important. 

After long days of snorkelling and fieldwork, getting enough sleep was really important. I found the Sleeep earplugs amazing for helping me switch off and get a good night's rest.

I also found Calmer particularly useful on the journey to Mexico. They take the edge off some of the harsh background noise while still allowing me to stay aware of what is happening around me.

I came home with new practical skills, a much greater understanding of marine research and even more motivation to continue working in conservation.
