Celebrity Make-Up Artist & Beauty Editor - Emma Turle
My name is Emma White Turle and I am a celebrity make-up artist and beauty editor of nearly 30 years. I live in West London with my husband and our three children.
My day varies hugely, I can be travelling to Paris or Milan for a few hours or I can be in London all day, but it does tend to start very early with a cup of tea and a catch up on overnight emails from my agents in Los Angeles and New York. I will then usually, once dressed obviously and having seen various children out to schools and universities, go into town for a meeting with a PR. A lot of brands host breakfasts for make-up artists and beauty editors to showcase their newly launching products. It’s a wonderful way to learn about new products and to test them out to see if we will incorporate them into our work kits or even our daily lives. It’s always social and a lovely way to catch up with friends and fellow artists but as someone who finds background noise distracting, I can find it hard to focus on someone who is speaking to me, I do use the Definition ear plugs for these situations sometimes. After these meetings I go home and pack my kit for work, the amount of which depends on the person I’m working with and what we are doing. For an editorial shoot, for instance, make-up artists tend to carry a lot of kit. We want to be able to adapt what we are creating on the day and so have to cover all possibilities, all colours, all textures and all finishes. The heavy cases mean I get to spend a cab journey catching up on emails or creating mood boards for clients and this I always enjoy as some “quiet time”. Photo shoots can be hectic with a lot of people present.
The constant low level chatter and the music that is always playing means I may reach for my Calmers. These don’t affect what sounds I can hear and I don’t feel isolated by them but they just stop the stressful noises. They do help me feel less overwhelmed and over stimulated. An editorial shoot with an actor or actress can be a part of their day on what we call a press junket. They are often promoting a film or tv show that is about to premiere so we may have to go back to their hotel after the shoot, they will have some interviews to do for which they need to be camera ready. This can be hectic with camera crews and various journalists waiting to interview them. Each interview can be about 5-6 minutes long and we watch them from a monitor room, so we can see when we have to go into them to fix something. The rooms get hot and overheated very quickly! We then get them ready for their red-carpet premiere which tend to take place in the early evening. This is usually a much quieter time and with only a few people in a room together, for me it’s my favourite way of working. Most clients like a calm and quiet space to prepare for a red-carpet event and so for me it’s perfect. After I send them on their way I tend to head home to children, husband, pets, homework, laundry and supper. The last part of my day involves double checking what my travel plans or work day is for the next day, prepping any kit that I need, clean my brushes from the day and then I like to have half an hour to read in bed. It’s peaceful and stopping the use of phones or computers absolutely helps me sleep better.
I think I am quite noise sensitive. If I have to concentrate on something I prefer silence or music I know. I find that if I am trying to do something in a noisy space I get very frustrated as I’ll be fixated by a noise that stops me thinking clearly.
I long for routine! Nothing about my life can be considered routine. But I do love a day where I have nothing to do. A rare day off. Then I make sure I take time for myself. My job and the fact I am a parent means I am always caring or looking after someone so I will try to take some time for myself, which can just be a dog walk, a yoga class or just going our for dinner with my family. As a self-employed person it’s very easy to always say yes to a job and forget to take time off for yourself and your family. So time away every summer holiday and Christmas is important to me and does give me time to reset.
Well, Calmer are always in my handbag. They absolutely help me remain calm throughout a busy day. I do use Definition sometimes as they can help me in a noisy space. I did add Earshade to my collection recently and find them really helpful on planes or Eurostar. Sometimes I just want to be able to concentrate (or nap) and they are wonderful to just take out the extraneous noises that can stop me.
Quick Fire Round:
What's your favourite sound?
A baby laughing.
What's your least favourite sound?
Ticking clocks.
What's your most impactful musical memory?
I grew up with musical parents and so I have a lot of musical memories actually. But the one that currently springs to mind is actually from where I first met Flare and that is the Isle of Wight Festival. My daughter, Evie, started working there four years ago with the production company that films it and watching live music side of the stage, with her: that shared experience is something I look forward to every year now.
