Definition® subtly increases sound quality in noisy places to improve the listening experience and reduce stress from noise.

Definition® is for anyone who wants to reduce stress from noise and enhance their listening experience.

Definition® is a unique ear tool that improves how our ears receive sound. It is not a hearing aid, and it does not amplify sound. Definition improves how our ears receive sound without the use of any electronics; Think of Definition like glasses for your ears that you wear to de-blur sound.

You can wear Definition at the Theatre, Public Transport, Noisy offices, Schools, Hospitals, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes, Shops and most noisy places where ear protection is not required. Definition is designed to be worn for a few hours at a time, if you need an all-day solution check out our Calmer range of products.

Ear resonance is reduced between 2-8kHz using our patented Mirror Image Sound technology that features 2 angled flat surfaces to reflect sound in a similar way to how a periscope reflects light. Frequency response is controlled using our Sound Balancing Technology to ensure balanced frequencies are received at the ear drum.

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), environmental noise is the second biggest killer after air pollution. They highlight that just a 10dB increase in daily traffic noise exposure leads to a significant increase in heart attack, obesity and stroke because it creates additional stress on our bodies due to the increased release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Following two decades of research in sound and hearing, we have discovered that noise is not the only problem - the shape of our ears also has a significant impact. Our ears are shell-like shapes that have evolved to increase stress response to sound by resonating sound at frequencies between 2kHz – 8kHz. This resonance triggers the release of cortisol. Whilst the effects of HRTF have been known and studied for some time, we are the first to realise that our ear shape plays a role in the release of cortisol and have developed unique technology to address the issue.

The Science Behind Clearer Sound

As sound waves enter your ears, they resonate and create subtle distortions that can make listening feel stressful or unclear. Definition refines how sound enters the ear, reducing distortion and improving clarity, detail, and balance.

Definition® FAQs

  • Definition won’t make the world quieter; instead, it makes sound clearer and more organised.

You still hear the same environment, but sounds feel less muddy and more separated. Voices are easier to pick out, detail is easier to focus on, and background noise feels less dominant. Rather than softening sound, Definition improves how your ears receive it, reducing the blur that normally makes busy places feel tiring or hard to follow.

  • Definition is designed to reduce stress from noise whilst also improving clarity and focus.

Calmer is primarily about softening stressful sounds and smoothing the sharp edges. Definition goes further by actively improving how clearly you hear, especially in environments where multiple sounds compete for your attention. If your priority is understanding speech better, enjoying music more clearly, or reducing listening effort, Definition is the more suitable choice.

  • Many people notice an immediate improvement, particularly with speech clarity and detail in noisy environments.

For others, the benefit becomes clearer after wearing Definition for a short time as your ears and brain adjust. As you spend time with it, listening often feels easier and more natural, especially in places where concentration would normally feel demanding.

  • Yes. Definition is specifically designed to improve how clearly you hear speech in busy environments.

It reduces distortion caused by ear resonance between 2 kHz and 8 kHz, which is the range that carries most speech detail. By controlling how sound reflects inside the ear, Definition helps voices sound more defined and distinct, rather than masked by surrounding noise.

  • Definition is completely passive and contains no electronics. It does not amplify sound or increase sound levels entering the ear.

It works by improving how sound is reflected and balanced before it reaches your eardrum. Because of this, it does not interfere with your natural hearing. Definition is not a hearing aid and not hearing protection. It is an ear tool that improves how sound is received.

The best I’ve tried!

I’ve tried numerous different ear plugs to help block out some of the background noise. These work and they are comfortable! I can wear them all day and I forget they are in. I’ll be ordering some for my teenage son. Excellent product.

Do NOT buy if you have small ears -- PAINFUL!!!!

These ear plugs are from very, very hard plastic. They come with silicone buds in different sizes, but even the smallest size is really big.

I'm very happy using Calmer Mini - that's my size. But the smallest size here is SO MUCH BIGGER than the Calmer Mini.

Definition measures 0.9 mm whereas Calmer Mini is something like 0.4

So it's almost twice as big. Also, Calmer Mini has a shape that is adapted to the natural form of your ear, this one is not.

When I put them in my ears (which is painful, but well, I tried) I hear my own voice louder in my head than before but I don't really notice a difference regarding outside noises. Admittedly, I'm at home, but I can hear the traffic on the street and there is no difference.
Maybe these are good if you have bigger ears, but if you have small ears, they are really painful and the only effect I notice is that I hear my voice in my head louder than I like.

Little or no positive effect

I tried them in both quiet (walk in a forest) and noisy (music concert) environments . In both cases, there was absolutely no enhanced definition, no left/right separation "stereo effect" and certainly no "Wow!" effect. Just a mild volume reduction, especially in the high frequencies. Sounds are muffled, and they actually created more distortion in my ears during the music concert, than without them. A complete waist of money for two small pieces of expensive plastic.

Calm Pro vs Definition.

I had the calm pro but found them a little uncomfortable after extended use so I bought the definitions and they are very comfortable, they help filter out unwanted noise like humming sounds for example. I have noise sensitivity so these are a must. They quiet the mind down. Very happy with my purchase.

I LOVED the calmer earplugs

I LOVED the Calmer earplugs. I thought these would be next level, but they greatly underperform as opposed to the Calmer ones.
They make the sound a little more dull, not more detail as they claim.
Waste of money for me.

A product exceeds expectation

Regularly searched for ear protect devices and found these earbuds which were not too expensive. Upon receipt of the earbuds, my initial feeling was that could it be a scam. It's just two pieces of plastic. However, after putting them on my ears, it really helped to filter out some noise in a crowded environment, without blocking it completely. I am happy with it.

T
The red silence
A tamed sonic cathedral of sound.

In a world increasingly filled with noise, the promise of "clarity enhancing earplugs" can sound like a godsend. These aren't your typical foam stoppers designed to muffle everything; instead, they aim to reduce overall decibel levels while maintaining, or even improving, the fidelity of important sounds. After spending some time with a popular model, here's my take.
The core concept behind clarity enhancing earplugs is selective attenuation. They often utilise a specialized acoustic filter that aims to block out harsh, damaging frequencies (like the din of a crowd or loud machinery) while allowing speech, music, or environmental sounds to pass through with greater definition. This is particularly appealing for musicians, concert-goers, motorcyclists, or even just individuals seeking a calmer, more focused environment.
My experience largely aligned with the claims. The first thing I noticed was a significant reduction in the overall "harshness" of everyday noise. A bustling coffee shop, which normally feels overwhelming, became a more manageable murmur. Conversations were clearer, and I found myself straining less to hear what others were saying.
At a live music event, these earplugs truly shone. The typical distortion and muddying of sound that often accompanies loud concerts were dramatically lessened. I could discern individual instruments and vocals with a precision I hadn't experienced before with ear protection. It felt like turning down the volume knob without losing the richness of the audio.
Comfort is paramount with any earplug, and these generally performed well. Most models come with a variety of tip sizes, allowing for a personalised fit, and these come with 3 different sizes which Flare support were excellent in assisting. Once properly inserted, they were surprisingly comfortable for extended periods, and I almost forgot I was wearing them. However, as with all in-ear devices, individual ear canal anatomy will play a role, and some trial and error with different tip sizes might be necessary.
While largely positive, there are a few considerations. For absolute silence, these are not the earplugs to choose. They are designed for clarity, not complete sound blockage. Also, the perception of "clarity" can be subjective. While I found an improvement, others might have slightly different experiences depending on their hearing and the specific sound environment. Finally, quality tends to be more expensive than basic so Flare definition holds itself well, it's an investment.
So if you're looking to protect your hearing while still enjoying the full spectrum of the music or reduce wind noise and engine roar without sacrificing the ability to hear traffic to creating a more focused environment without being completely isolated.
Practically anyone sensitive to loud noise can now soften the world without losing a connection to it
In conclusion Flare definition deliver on their promise of a more refined listening experience in noisy environments. They represent a significant step up from traditional ear protection, offering a balance between noise reduction and sound fidelity. While not cheap, the ability to protect your hearing while still engaging with the world around you makes them a highly recommended accessory for many. If you're looking to turn down the volume on life's overwhelming soundtrack without missing a beat, these are definitely worth considering.

It does what it promise

I enjoyed using these during a short car trip: they are perfect in this situation to understand what people say and listen to music easily. I will totally always use them on car trips!
I used them in a restaurant and they where fine until the noise didn't start to getting louder, at this point i preferred calmer extra. If there will ever be a version of this with some kind of filter then they would be perfect in crowded very louded places.
They are definitely less discreet than calmer, could be nice to make something with a cooler design to make them look a stylish accessory because they are well visible, even in a clear color.
They come in a nice paper box, maybe a little big, but it's something nice if you want to store them away for some reason.

Now you're talking

This has got to be one of the better products flare audio has produced. Although they are not in the calmer range, for me personally they do have a slight calming effect as they dampen down a lot of distant and background noises to a level where it doesn't take my concentration away from or interfere with the person I'm talking to, allowing me to hear more clearly what they're saying. I was having some trouble with certain frequencies with the original version of definition and was offered a full refund as I had tried all that was suggested from the helpful team. This new version has corrected that little issue. They're also more comfortable. That's another reason why I love flare audio, they listen to customer feedback then act on it and help with any questions or issues you may have. I'm also finding with the definition I'm not having to keep turning the TV volume up and down constantly throughout a movie which is a blessing in itself. I use the medium tips that come in the packaging and they're perfect, allowing the definition to sit comfortably in the tips of my ears exactly as you see in the advertised pictures. Music through headphones also sounds so much clearer, less muddy, frequencies that are very close and hard to distinguish without, now come through separated and much more detailed. I love how they give you 100 days from date of purchase to try them out as this allows you to use the product in many different environments over a long enough period of time to get used to the change and to try different tips and fitting suggestions by team flare. Such a fantastic product.
Pros: comfortable, light, and work exactly as described.
Cons: although price might seem high they're totally worth it and flare audio do have great sales every year to keep an eye out for.

Not quite!

I was really looking forward to trying these Definition ear pieces. I put them in right away and dedicated a full day to them right away. At first, I was fairly impressed. Sounds were crisper or brighter. Not louder, but perhaps clearer. However, they also increased the noise of my own breathing and voice. In other words, it was a little like having ear plugs! The two sensations sort of canceled each other out. It really didn't help me hear better out in the world. I'm disappointed. The one area I was truely hoping to improve was watching TV with my wife where I always have to ask her to increase the volume by 3 numbers. And in this example, they did improve my hearing. As long as I sat still and the room was quiet, the TV seemed a little bit crisper and I could make out dialog just a little bit easier. I'm happy for that, but was hoping for overall improvment in daily situations and as I said, it falls short.

Not what I was expecting

I've edited my original review as I was describing these wrong due to me not having the right word for what I was experiencing.
I've been using flare audio products for a long time now and love the calmer range with the Calmer 2 prototype being my favourite so far for comfort, and was sad to see these leave the shop so quick, but then got very excited when I read about the definition because for me although they aren't in the Calmer category, they read perfect for my needs so purchased a pair straight away. I've been trying them for a few days now in noisy environments like hospitals where I have a hard time hearing what people are saying to me. Yes they're very comfortable, yes they block a lot of background noise out while allowing you to hear what's close by nice and clear. However, I'm getting the occlusion effect, but only with certain frequencies at certain volumes. I've tried everything suggested from the flare audio crew who was indeed very helpful in suggesting different tips and fitting instructions but for my ear canal shape etc this is still happening for me. I'm giving the product 4 stars for the build quality, design, comfort and overall appearance, they are low profile and quite discreet. But taking a star off for this issue I'm personally having. (Not everyone will have this issue as we're all different) The reason I've actually gave the full 5 stars though, is for the help given and the fact they offered me a full refund if I was still having issues after experimenting with different tips and fitting. Can't argue with that for customer service.

Bit of a game-changer

Bit of a game-changer. I struggle with auditory processing, so hearing people over background noise is a struggle. These meant I could hear my friends over the house of both fans going during the last heatwave. Definitely worth every penny.

in fact, when I visited a supermarket this morning, I found some of the higher frequencies (child) piercing. I had to remove the buds.

Uncomfortable

Good concept but very uncomfortable, they caused me to have pain in my ears and I had to remove them after an hour. For people with ADHD like myself these are irritating to wear and the hard plastic design was not well thought out.
