According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), environmental noise is the second biggest killer after air pollution. They highlight that just a 10 dB increase in daily traffic noise exposure leads to a significant increase in heart attack, obesity and stroke because it creates additional stress on our bodies due to the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Following 18 years of research in sound, we have discovered that noise was not the only issue - the shape of our ears has an impact too. Our ears are shell-like shapes that have evolved to increase our stress response to sound by adding additional resonance to frequencies between 2kHz – 8kHz. This additional ear resonance creates distortions that trigger the release of cortisol. Whilst the effects of HRTF have been known and studied for some time, we are the first to realise that these ear distortions are also stress-inducing.

The tragus part of our ears creates a small shell-like shape that resonates sound, creating a stress response to noise. The patented technology used in Calmer alters the geometry of the tragus, replacing it with a flat surface that reduces resonance.
