Calmer helps you feel less stressed in noisy places by improving how sound reflects inside the ears. Unlike other earplugs that block or muffle sound, Calmer simply changes how sound reflects inside the ears. This means that Calmer does not affect your hearing and most people forget they are wearing them.

Calmer is a hollow, soft silicone, ear plug alternative that reduces ear resonance (sound decay). You won't notice any change to your hearing initially, but when you wear them in a noisy place and take them out you will realise how much Calmer is reducing your stress from noise.

Wear Calmer just before you enter a noisy space and keep them in your ears until you leave. You won't feel any benefits from Calmer in quiet places as the technology is only effective when there is noise around you.

Typical places to wear Calmer include... Busy Places, Public Transport, Noisy offices, Schools, Hospitals, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes, Shops, At Home and more.

The patented technology Calmer features subtly changes the internal geometry of our ears to reduce sound decay / resonance that is caused by our ears shell-like shape.

It's this resonance that makes annoying noises more stressful as it triggers our fight or flight response.

Calmer are hollow with a flat internal surface that improves in-ear sound reflections in order to reduce ear resonance (sound decay) at frequencies between 2-8 kHz. This reduces our stress response to sound without any reduction of volume.

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), environmental noise is the second biggest killer after air pollution. They highlight that just a 10dB increase in daily traffic noise exposure leads to a significant increase in heart attack, obesity and stroke because it creates additional stress on our bodies due to the increased release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Following two decades of research in sound and hearing, we have discovered that noise is not the only problem - the shape of our ears also has a significant impact. Our ears are shell-like shapes that have evolved to increase stress response to sound by resonating sound at frequencies between 2kHz – 8kHz. This resonance triggers the release of cortisol. Whilst the effects of HRTF have been known and studied for some time, we are the first to realise that our ear shape plays a role in the release of cortisol and have developed unique technology to address the issue.

AMAZED

I spend my workday in a room with eight toddlers, the noise overwhelms me incredibly. My co worker was AMAZED today at how calm I was with these in! (Pun intended).

Calmer® Extra FAQs

    • You need Calmer if you want to reduce your stress response to everyday noise without blocking or muffling sound.
    • You need Calmer Extra if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased sound reduction and gentle volume attenuation.
    • You need Calmer Pro if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased stress reduction thanks to its aluminium core wrapped in soft silicon.
    • You need Calmer Kids if you want all the benefits of Calmer, but they are for a child aged 5 to 12.
  • Calmer is designed to reduce distortion caused by the shape of the ear by using a tiny waveguide to reflect sound more accurately into the ear. This reduces the impact of harsh and stress-inducing frequencies without blocking or muffling sound.

By lowering the stress response to everyday noise, many people find sound feels more comfortable and less overwhelming, particularly in busy or noisy environments. Some customers with tinnitus choose to use Calmer for this reason.

However, we do not recommend using Calmer solely to help with tinnitus or ringing in the ears. Calmer is designed to improve comfort around sound and reduce noise related stress, rather than target tinnitus itself.

  • Calmer sits at the entrance of the ear canal and does not go deep into the ear. For the best fit and performance, follow our step-by-step visual fitting guide.

    Calmer Fitting Guide.

  • Calmer has been independently tested by The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Southampton University. Read their full report here:

Never thought they would work. But i was wrong.

My partner has had multiple head injuries causing real bad sound sensitivity. These things genuinely help so much at reducing his overall fatigue. He would reccomend these to anyone with similar issues. So would i.

Unfortunately doesn’t fit on my years

For some reason the fit is too small. I believe was shipped to me the Small size, even tho I marked Large. The item simply don’t work.

Exactly what I'm looking for

I had a few calmers and decided to try the calmer extra for a bit of noise reduction. I love how this works without occlusion. I still can hear and speak normally but without the head sound.

So far so good

I've been taking this everywhere with me; for work, for the gym, and or noisy stores/restaurants. It's really helped maintain my mood and minimize unnecessary anxiety that comes with irritating noise. Highly recommend purchasing the mini container and not the black pouch that comes free. The black pouch sheds, at first I thought there was someone else's ear or nose hair inside the packaging which was really off-putting. But I rationalized that the package was sealed therefore it's theoretically tamper proof...right? Anyways just get the mini container.

Overall calmer experience is great, I but the 10dB d'amener in when I need focus/will not be conversing. The mini calmer as is helps in social settings. Minor inconvenience of I have to switch back and forth though but that's why I carry the container key chain.

Visually the mini is pretty much hidden behind my ear. The 'nude' colour match is ok, it's a lot more yellow than on the packaging. Why do yellow?? The design makes it easy to take out so I don't have to stress about it being stuck in my ear. Enjoy!

Working well to lower the cicada and cricket, and traffic, noise

Since the mini size is the only size Flare produces that really fits my ears comfortably I am very happy that the Extra is now an option for the Calmer Mini. It is working well to lower the outdoor summer cicada and cricket, and traffic, noise so I can enjoy having my windows open on nice days.

I'm disappointed

I'm disappointed. I have been using regular "Calmer" plugs for a long time now and they are always in my pocket. I did not find these new ones to be useful at all. They feel like regular earplugs except they don't fit very well.
I ordered the same size that I've been using. If I could return them I would.

Very Versatile from Crowds to Concerts

I use my Flares when vending at events or in large crowds, even at concerts, and I like being able to choose how much dampening I need with the additional bit that I can take in or out. But moreso I like that Flares maintain clarity! Rather than a full ear plug its more like a drum mute. I've tried other products in different styles and brands and I prefer the clarity of Flares; I can still be immersed in my environment without the stress of the noise getting to me. Highly recommend.

Don't really notice 10db reduction in noise level

The strain bit seems to work fine, however, I can't say I notice a huge reduction in noise volume with the inserts in.

I am not sure id my expectations were unrealistic but these ear plugs with the inserts dont dampen enough sound

Love them!

Love them, it is a subtle difference but means I can tolerate so much more. They flatten the noise enough that I can tune stuff out without losing any situational awareness.
I don't love the plus inserts though, I find they give me the occluded feeling of earplugs which is exactly what I don't want from these

I'm using it since a few days and it changes life

I'm using them since a few days and it changes life ! I have a huge sensibility and noise or sound can really attack my ears like ****. The calmers didn't really reduce sounds a lot but they made them softer. I can heard without stressing my ears and it makes me feel more relaxe and rest. As an autistic person, I have to deal with the new feeling in the ears because the calmers aren't like earpods, you can't put them inside the ears but it's confortable and stay still. Just harder time to time and mostly at the end of the day. But it's only because of my autism and huge sensibility. For other, I'm sure people can forget they put them. Thanks ! With calmer I feel less disconnected from real world and I can have more conversation with people during day ❤️.

I'm very happy with these

I'm very happy with these. I was worried that the 10db reduction would be too much, but its great. I wouldn't mind a little more! Easy to hear everything around me still.

Must-have for sensitive ears

I started looking at calmer earbuds after my therapist and I came to the conclusion that I have very sensitive ears. What I thought was social anxiety is more so an aversion to noisy spaces. Just the first week with these calmer extra buds has been great. As soon as I put them in, sounds are dampened and slightly softer. I am way more focused during group conversations and feel less like a nervous mouse when I’m in crowded spaces lol. If I’m talking or eating the buds wiggle out a little bit so I just make sure to push them in every so often. The hole thru the middle makes my voice sound natural in my head, so I usually forget I’m wearing them. I couldn’t be happier with my choice, and they come in a nice little bag! I’ve yet to need the extra insert for the middle, but it’s good to know I have an option for extra sound protection.

A must for a teacher

I love my Calmers. They take the edge off, but also allows me to still hear what is happening in my class.

R

I just got them and put them in. I like having the options of the "extra". I have Loops as well, to me, it goes like this:

Normal hearing: everything is too much, except myself - that's fine.
Level 1: Calmer by itself - takes the edges off with no/very little hearing myself, talking feels normal
Level 2: Calmer with Extra inserts - slightly more muted but clear, a little bit more hearing myself, talking is a little weird
Level 3: Loops - even more muted but still can hear clearly, a lot of hearing myself, talking is painful
Level 4: foam earplugs - very externally quiet (not silent) but way too much hearing myself, can not talk without too much pain (sleep/with headphones only)

Note: I have autism, adhd, hearing loss, hearing sensitivites (depends on frequency), and auditory processing disorder.

Bonus, these fit in with the loops in their case.

These help and do not feel weird. Seem easy to clean as well.

Con: very small and might be easy to lose, especially the "extra" part.

Our Story

The very first Flare products came to life at our first Flare HQ – a garage in our founders garden. As a small team of three we designed and built our first loudspeakers and provided PA for gigs and festivals.
