Taylor Heaton: “Mom on the Spectrum.”
I thought: “okay, I'm glad it helps other people, but I don't need this” until I tried it and now it, it sounds a little bit dramatic, but this accommodation has become life changing to me and something that I don't want to live without."

“This is an accommodation that I thought was totally unnecessary!
I thought: “okay, I'm glad it helps other people, but I don't need this” until I tried it and now it, it sounds a little bit dramatic, but this accommodation has become life changing to me and something that I don't want to live without. The way I describe getting used to autistic accommodations is this: a lot of us think that we don't need certain things because we've gotten used to just pushing through, making do with how we've always done things.
It's like living with a pebble in your shoe and you're like, yeah, it's just a pebble, it's always been there, I've made peace with it. But then you take the pebble out of your shoe and you see what it's like to live without that pebble and you're like, oh my gosh, I could have been living this way the whole time!
That's how I feel about my flare Calmer earbuds.
Hear me out. Because I was not an earbud person. Earbuds, I felt like they make me feel kind of claustrophobic. I don't like to be aware of anything in my ears. I also hate being able to hear my breathing or the noises I make when I eat, that's a nightmare.

My friend told me about these (Calmer) and was like, “you have to try 'em!”
For whatever reason I did. I think the hole in the middle kind of sold me, 'cause I was like, okay, well maybe since sound can go in and out, that they'll be a little more tolerable.
Oh my gosh. These are like magic!
They're just magic. Sounds around me are not muffled.
They're just easier to tolerate.
The way that flare describes it on their website is it kind of takes out the harsh highs and the upsetting lows and it kind of equalizes everything. So what you're hearing is more, you know, middle wavelengths.
I wear these to the grocery store.
- They help when I'm in the car.
- I always wear them at school events with my kids.
…and I didn't realize it, but basically, I was like living up here and when I wear my, my Flare earbuds, it's like I just, I can breathe a little bit more.
It's really something I just had to try to believe for myself.
But my current favourite is the Calmer 2 Prototype.
This is brand new. It just came out and they fit so well that I forget I'm wearing them. And it definitely decreases everyday stress.”
Comfortable and discreet
Takes the edge off stressful noises
Helps keep you calmer
