International Women’s Day

March 8th celebrates International Woman’s Day, 2026. This year’s theme is 'Give To Gain', where our community is encouraged to support woman; whether through, knowledge, donations, visibility, advocacy, education, training, mentoring or time, contributing to women's advancement and helping to create a more supportive and interconnected world.

As part of International Women’s Day, Flare’s Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Naomi Roberts, has been invited by Meta to share her knowledge and experiences in London on March 12th - being interviewed as part of their Founders Unwrapped social series.

Naomi will be talking about her journey in business, advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and how Flare use Meta to help connect with their audience.

Here we speak with Naomi about her journey as a woman in business, and how Flare is supporting women, both through sharing knowledge and with the products they create.

..............
Can you tell us about your journey at Flare?
..............

We formed Flare in 2010, and spent our early years as a pro audio manufacturer and hire company. Our team of three re-invented the loudspeaker, and were proud to gain praise from music industry legends including Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley and producer ‘Flood’ in the process. We came up with our first patents and began to focus on reducing resonance (distortion) in our sound producing devices. We achieved great breakthroughs and decided to take a sidestep into the consumer audio world, as we were confident our technologies could be miniaturised, so in 2015 we launched our first consumer earphone. The rest is history!

..............
How has your role at Flare evolved, and what are your day-to-day responsibilities
..............

Initially my role was mainly graphic design, marketing and branding.
Today I’m heavily involved in all aspects of the business. I manage our team of 19 and cover everything from day to day running, strategy, business development opportunities and product launches, to collaborating on our social media campaigns.

..............
What has your personal journey been like as a woman in business in this sector?
..............

There have been challenges along the way, particularly at trade shows or where people in the industry have historically wanted to speak with a man. Things have changed though, and there’s now a lot more woman in tech and representation of woman in this industry. Stereotypes have been broken and I believe attitudes are changing for the better.

..............
As well as Flare being awarded several major business awards, including the Kings Award for Innovation 2025, you’ve personally been awarded the Dynamic Business Awards Large Business of the Year Award, which celebrates female achievement in business. How has this impacted you?
..............

Whilst I don’t enjoy being put in the spotlight, it is wonderful to have all the years of hard work recognised. For me, awards are a moment to reflect on the people who have helped us along the way - our team, our partners and our customers. Flare has always been built on relationships and community, so when the business is recognised, it feels like a shared achievement. It’s not just recognition for what we’re built, but of how far we’ve come.

..............
Can you tell us about some of the work you’re doing to help support other woman in business?
..............

I’m very honoured to have been asked by company’s including Meta, Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce and several schools to speak about my experiences and advice for people starting out in business. I’m passionate about championing underrepresented voices and sharing powerful stories about how sound shapes lives, and speak about this on behalf of Meta at advertising events. We also share amazing stories from amazing women as part of Flare’s My Audio World and Sound Sensitivities blog series’.

..............
What advice would you give to other women aspiring to senior leadership roles?
..............

Trust your instincts and don’t wait for permission to create opportunities. Some of the most meaningful connections and partnerships I’ve built have come from simply reaching out to someone because I felt there was a conversation worth having. Leadership doesn’t always come from having the loudest voice in the room - it often comes from empathy, listening and building genuine relationships. I also think it’s important not to feel that you have to fit a traditional mould of leadership. Your perspective, your sensitivity and your ability to understand people can be some of your greatest strengths.

..............
How do your products help to support women in their day-to-day life?
..............

According to research, at least one in three of us are likely to be sound-sensitive. Interestingly, women tend to be more affected than men, especially when it comes to conditions like misophonia and hyperacusis. Many of us don’t even realise we’re sound sensitive, we just know that certain sounds trigger us or are uncomfortable, but it’s a huge issue, especially today where we’re constantly met by a barrage of noise and high stress environments. Our product Calmer takes the edge off these uncomfortable frequencies, to soften sound and enable us to relax and focus without being triggered. This has proven life-changing for many woman who have shared their stories with us. So much so that we’ve created a Sound Sensitivities blog on our website, where brilliant people talk about their lives and experiences with sound sensitivities. We’re very proud of how Calmer is helping people. We’ve sold over 2 million pairs across 186 countries, and it was this product that earned Flare the 2025 King Award for Business in the Innovation category.

..............
Outside of Flare, what are your interests and what do you do to unwind?
..............

In my spare time I love long walks in the countryside, going to galleries and vintage shops, listening to music and going to gigs - and (when time allows!) drawing.

..............
Who are some of the women you admire and why?
..............

I love Tracey Emin, because she’s so fearless and bold. I’ve always admired Joanna Lumley, and had the pleasure of meeting her at a Meta event. She was so warm and witty and totally lived up to my expectation. I also really respect Nina Simone, who was not only a brilliant artist, but incredibly fierce and true to herself.

..............
Is there anything else you’d like to share as part of International Women’s Day?
..............

For me, International Women’s Day is a reminder of how important it is to ensure that different voices and perspectives are represented. Some of the most powerful stories I’ve come across through Flare have come from people who might not normally be given a platform. When we take the time to listen to those stories, we learn so much about each other and about the world around us. I feel very grateful to work with a team and a community that values empathy, curiosity and connection, and I hope we continue to create spaces where people feel seen, heard and able to share their experiences.

Founders Unwrapped spotlights innovative founders and how they use platforms like Meta to drive business growth. Naomi will join Nicola Mendelsohn, Head of Meta’s Global Business Groupon March 12th, to discuss all things business. Look out for the episode on Nicola’s socials, linked below.
