Discover Mirror Image Sound™ – A Revolution in Audio by Flare
We’re incredibly proud of our unique technologies – it’s what sets us apart from everyone else and it’s what gained us our recent Kings Award in Innovation.
Our patented Mirror Image Sound™ technology lies at the heart of our audio innovation – a radically new approach that treats sound like light.
When sound travels to our ears, it interacts with the complex shape of our head and ears – a phenomenon known as Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF). This can introduce unwanted resonances and distortions, especially in traditional earphone designs. These resonances colourthe audio, blurring detail and altering the original intent of the sound.
Just as a mirror reflects light directly and clearly, Flare’s technology creates a precise, unaltered reflection of sound – what we call Mirror Image Sound. By eliminating resonant chambers we avoid the buildup of energy that causes HRTF resonance. The result is sound delivered directly, cleanly, and with perfect symmetry to both ears – just as it was recorded.
“If a track has been produced not addressing HRTF how will this change my listening experience when it’s removed by Mirror Image Sound Technology?”
It’s a great question and an important one. When you remove HRTF resonance through Flare’s Mirror Image Sound technology, you’re eliminating unintended coloration introduced by the listener’s own anatomy – not undoing the spatial intent of the music’s production.
Here’s what it means more clearly:
Music is typically produced using speakers or headphones – the producers ears will add their own resonance to the sound they hear – and they often compensate for this in the mix. When you listen to music your ears add their own specific resonance (HRTF) meaning there’s a double distortion. Our technology removes your ear resonance. You’re not altering the original sound design just giving your brain a clearer, more symmetrical reference.
By removing the listener-side HRTF (what your ear does to incoming sound), Flare’s technology: By removing the listener-side HRTF (what your ear does to incoming sound), Flare’s technology: Reveals the original mix more faithfully, because there's no additional distortion added. It doesn’t strip out spatial effects and it clarifies rather than flattens the soundstage. In fact spatial cues (panning, reverb, stereo width) are often more apparent because they’re not masked by resonance.
Spatial mixes (e.g. Dolby Atmos or binaural recordings) often use a modelled HRTF to simulate 3D positioning. Flare’s earphones don’t remove that processing - they simply don’t add any extra filtering on top of it. You’ll still hear spatial placement, often with greater accuracy, because your own anatomical interference has been bypassed.
