Calmer® Filters FAQs
-
Calmer are designed to reduce our stress response to noises that annoy us without isolating us from sound. They are gentle but very effective. If you need help deciding which Calmer would best suit you, check out our help guide here.
-
Calmer is designed to reduce distortion caused by the shape of the ear by using a tiny waveguide to reflect sound more accurately into the ear. This reduces the impact of harsh and stress-inducing frequencies without blocking or muffling sound.
By lowering the stress response to everyday noise, many people find sound feels more comfortable and less overwhelming, particularly in busy or noisy environments. Some customers with tinnitus choose to use Calmer for this reason.
However, we do not recommend using Calmer solely to help with tinnitus or ringing in the ears. Calmer is designed to improve comfort around sound and reduce noise related stress, rather than target tinnitus itself.

Easy to fit into my Calmer and definitely raises the "bar" on sound/noice reduction
Still very light to wear
Very easy way to upgrade calmer to acoustic protection that even works great for concerts, as I unvoluntarily tested when I forgot my fitted Concert plugs but luckily Had my emergency pair of calmer and the filters with me.
The filters function exactly as intended, with the 15db dulling the sound even more than the 10db, enough that it is noticeable. People talking to me while I’m wearing even the 15s are still heard clearly, but it sounds like they are further away than right next to me.
The only issue I have is the 15db filters have the occlusion effect where I can hear internal noises loud enough to be bothersome. I have to take them out while walking or eating, but as far as filtering sound goes, they work perfectly. I refuse to take away a star just because they don’t do what I want them do, when they do everything they are supposed to do.
Excellent I lost the insert from my previous flare buds and these are a brilliant replacement. It comes with different db filters. I love Flare products and will continue to use them
These inserts are tiny and rather fiddly, I've unfortunately lost mine. For me they hardly seem to make a difference vs the regular Calmers. I would rather have an insert that completely blocks the hole and just turns them into full earplugs for really noisy environments.
I started using Calmers in 2019 for my tinnitus and they made a huge difference. These filters are game changers!! It feels like with more and more people are not using headphones and listening to music or having a video chat on public transport so it become even harder to shut the excess noise out. These filters soften it all. You can really hear the difference when you take both the filter and calmer out to test it. There is for me anyway a subtle difference in the 2x db filters. Easy to insert and wash. I would highly recommend them if you have tinnitus or even if you don't and just want to soften the noise around you.
This extra filter was exactly what my son needed!
Lifesaver in noisy restaurants. So happy!
These work suprisingly well! They are very small and therefore can be difficult to handle on the go, but they do their job. They reduce the volume just enough to make a difference, and the "plugged ear" sounds inside my ears are noticable but minimal. They even stabilize (for lack of a better word) the Calmer so they sit better in my ears. I basically live with these things in my ears now whenever I leave the house.
Just a heads up for others who might be very sensitive like myself. I did notice a little effect on volume while trying these on in an large open office landscape, not much though. Though, despite others saying in comments they dont have a occulsion effect, i disagree. I am very sensitive to sounds, my own breath included, and i instantly noticed these are too solid, and I hear my breath more than usual. This small increase in my own sounds made me remove them quickly.
These two filters provide low attenuation that is perfect for people with sensitive hearing to dial things down but still be able to interact easily. They will not protect you from loud sounds at all, you would need something way above -20dB of attenuation for that, -30dB even. Works in restaurant, bars, office, everyday life. Not for busy roads, not for concerts.
The great thing is that they do not cause any noticeable occlusion effect, which is very rare for non-foam earplugs.
A bit of clarification though: when you get Calmer Extra, you get baseline Calmer + the 10dB filter that is sold here. I think both filters should simply be included with every Calmer purchase. Having to pay 12€ more to get the filters is not decent. At least with the filters you get a little plastic box, because buying Calmer alone will get you a useless pouch
I was disappointed with these, because they have almost no effect on sound volume at all.
Calmer Filters have genuinely helped me feel more comfortable in conversations with several people around the table. What I like most is that I can still hear everyone clearly without feeling overloaded by the background noise. For meals, conversations, and group settings, they’ve been a really practical and noticeable help.
Works perfectly in cinema or environment with to much noise where you still want to hear everything, but want less volume.
Small easy to fit and instant reduction.
Great for noisier environments and not needing to carry around additional full ear plugs.
Also all 4 fit inside a slim capsule alongside the calmer ear tips as well.
These have been great for bad sensory days (I have Auditory Processing Disorder). They reduce the noise without affecting sound clarity unlike traditional foam earplugs. Working in a production kitchen, they've made a big difference in my quality of life on and off the clock.
The only drawback is that I've had them come loose while wearing them (I use a pair of outlet calmer earplugs at work since earplugs need to have a lanyard in the kitchen).
Even with the medium filter on it, the reduce of frequencies is not noticeable.
Got this to add to my first gen Calmer, and they do make a huge difference. The result is somewhere between “no ear gear” and “full fledged earplugs”, which is great for day to day.
That makes a notable difference in the ambient noise levels while still being able to hear everything clearly
I love my Calmer earbuds, but the Calmer Filters are a true sensory safe haven!
I bought these to enhance my sound dampening experience in the office and on migraine days. I have been very pleased. So pleased in fact, I have bought both for my sister. I would also recommend for people with autism, AuDHD, or ADHD. These are a huge help.
Fit my Calmer ear filters perfectly. Still very comfortable. Can easily continue to sleep with the calmers in the ear canals.
Makes a massive difference to the volume and what sound you hear
The filters help to dampen environmental sounds while maintaining comfort, and I experience wearing it as calmer. Highly Recommend.
I'm convinced that part of the solution to attaining world peace is by having everyone own a Calmer with these filters. I love my Calmer, and it’s clear why relying on earplugs—even high‑quality ones like Loop plugs—can eventually harm your hearing. Sometimes you just need to lower the volume—not only for your sanity but also to protect your ears.
One improvement I’d suggest is making the filter from a softer material, so it’s comfortable enough to wear while sleeping. I already use my Calmer Night with a filter in place, and a gentler filter would make the experience even more pleasant.
I’m so pleased that Flare have made these. I love my Calmer Pro but sometimes you just need the volume turning down a little and these do the trick wonderfully. They also give more structure to regular Calmer which works better for me too in terms of comfort and fit. You can hear your own voice a bit more but still nothing like when wearing ear plugs or earphones.
These are too noisy putting in. They are plastic and easy enough to place in the Calmers. However, when putting them into your ears, they occupy the space I usually press at a little to get the Calmers in. With these filters in, that gets even harder, because you Calmer is no longer flexible. Pressing down on these filters, it's just so noisy, I don't want to keep touching them, but I have to, to get them in and maybe press them back into place from time to time. Not the best feeling for sound-sensitives.
Also, my ears are big babies and every earplug hurts, except for the regular Calmers. So to be fair, I got these against better judgement. They make your Calmer no longer be flexible and hollow, so there is no more forming to your ears. My ears can't handle that. If your ears can handle other types of earplugs, honestly, you'll probably not have this problem.
I use my Calmers all day every day and they’ve helped a lot with my sensory overload and even my tinnitus. However, these filters are brilliant for when I need to reduce the volume and I love the versatility they offer. I carry the filters with me so I can pop them in and take them out as needed and that’s really the best feature for me of the Calmers with filters. Other ear plugs I’ve used feel bulky and isolating but with Calmer the isolation is reduced even with filters in and they are much more comfortable and less bulky - I love the adaptability Calmers with filters offer and this combination offers me the best audio solution I’ve found yet. Highly recommend.
These are incredible!! They reduce volume WITHOUT ruining the clarity of sound. I'm seriously impressed. They're also comfortable and I forget I'm wearing them. 10/10 recommend. They are well worth it! :-)
