Calmer® alleviates stress from noise without lowering volume. Unlike earplugs that reduce sound level, Calmer improves how sound is reflected inside the ear which calms our stress response to noise.

Calmer are designed to be worn inside the ears whenever you are in a noisy place. The major benefit of Calmer is that your hearing is not affected, you still hear everything clearly. Calmer are helping millions of people go about their lives less affected by sound, they can be life-changing for noise sensitive people.

For extra sound reduction add a filter pack to reduce sound by -12dB and -15dB.

Calmer Kids is for children aged 5-12 years old to reduce stress and distractions caused by everyday noise. Noise-sensitive children often notice the effect immediately, whereas others may need to wear Calmer Kids for 5-10 minutes in a noisy setting and then remove them to appreciate the stress reduction that Calmer Kids is delivering.

Calmer Kids is a hollow, soft silicone, ear tool that reduces ear resonance. It’s not a traditional earplug and it doesn’t block or muffle sound which means children don’t experience the occlusion effect that is common with all other earplugs. Calmer Kids fits discreetly inside the ear and can be worn for long periods of time to improve learning and reduce distractions.

Calmer Kids allows children to communicate perfectly and is designed to become part of their everyday routine. They should wear Calmer Kids just before they enter a noisy space and keep it in their ears until they leave so that they minimise their stress response. Typical places to wear Calmer Kids include... Classrooms, Playgrounds, Busy Places, Public Transport, Hospitals, Restaurants, Cafes, Shops and more.

Calmer Kids alters the internal shape of children’s ears to reduce ear resonance at frequencies between 2-8 kHz. This children’s version is a smaller size, features super-soft silicone and specific sound-tuning for young, sensitive ears. They feature a flat surface inside a hollow soft silicone design to improve how sound reflects inside our ears. This helps reduce stress from sound with no volume reduction or muffling - just a calmer way of hearing.

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), environmental noise is the second biggest killer after air pollution. They highlight that just a 10dB increase in daily traffic noise exposure leads to a significant increase in heart attack, obesity and stroke because it creates additional stress on our bodies due to the increased release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Following two decades of research in sound and hearing, we have discovered that noise is not the only problem - the shape of our ears also has a significant impact. Our ears are shell-like shapes that have evolved to increase stress response to sound by resonating sound at frequencies between 2kHz – 8kHz. This resonance triggers the release of cortisol. Whilst the effects of HRTF have been known and studied for some time, we are the first to realise that our ear shape plays a role in the release of cortisol and have developed unique technology to address the issue.

Real Relief. Real Results.

“Great! These worked so well for my noise-sensitive 7-year-old. She was embarrassed to wear headphones so these were perfect. She recently wore them to a sibling's dance competition and she really enjoyed herself and could hear us but not be bothered by the volume. They are really great!"

“Life changing. My son hates lots of noise around him and sometimes this is in class. Since he has been wearing his calmer kids, he has felt more comfortable. He said it takes away the high pitch sounds making life nice around him. They are discreet too and very comfortable to wear.
Thank you so much.”

Calmer® Kids FAQs

    • You need Calmer if you want to reduce your stress response to everyday noise without blocking or muffling sound.
    • You need Calmer Extra if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased sound reduction and gentle volume attenuation.
    • You need Calmer Pro if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased stress reduction thanks to its aluminium core wrapped in soft silicon.
    • You need Calmer Kids if you want all the benefits of Calmer, but they are for a child aged 5 to 12.
  • Calmer is designed to reduce distortion caused by the shape of the ear by using a tiny waveguide to reflect sound more accurately into the ear. This reduces the impact of harsh and stress-inducing frequencies without blocking or muffling sound.

By lowering the stress response to everyday noise, many people find sound feels more comfortable and less overwhelming, particularly in busy or noisy environments. Some customers with tinnitus choose to use Calmer for this reason.

However, we do not recommend using Calmer solely to help with tinnitus or ringing in the ears. Calmer is designed to improve comfort around sound and reduce noise related stress, rather than target tinnitus itself.

  • Calmer sits at the entrance of the ear canal and does not go deep into the ear. For the best fit and performance, follow our step-by-step visual fitting guide.

  • Calmer has been independently tested by The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Southampton University. Read their full report here:

I was a bit sceptic, but am a fan now

I was a bit sceptic for the price. But I bought a skin coloured set with filters. I use them almost daily, especially in crowded places where it is imported for me to still here, like in traffic, train, etc. If you use them without filter, you take the sharp edges of surrounding sounds, no occlusion. When you put in filters, you protect your ears much better, so they would do good in concerts for example. Occlusion is minimalized. Which is a great asset. I am not sceptic anymore, they are worthed the money, especially when you are sensitive for sound or just want to protect your ears. So I am a fan now.

Nope, colossal waste of money

Bought a small pair for my son, and normal for me as we both have issues with focusing attention and distractions from background noise. My son lost his after ten minutes playing with his sister, we managed to find one after scouring the bedroom, the other's gone. Mine just felt like gummy earplugs that just obstructed sound clarity rather than volume and are too easy to push too far in to make recovery easy.

Has improved my productivity 100%+

Honestly, the calmer ear buds have changed my working life. I am diagnosed with ADHD and as a business woman at 42 years old, I always struggled with productivity. I saw Flare and thought I would give them a try. They are a game changer when it comes to work!
That 'noise' which isn't a noise but is just there in the background (ADHD'ers will know) goes compeltely when I have them in. The minute I take them out, I hear and feel that 'noise' again. I now wear them all the time, even when I'm not working. They help me hear conversations better in noisy environments too. But the focus is the biggest benefit to me. I can't remember them enough for business owners with ADHD, who even struggle to focus in a room on their own.

They are ok

They are ok. Overpriced. I bought the two size kit with filters and wish I didn’t splurge. The filters in particular are tiny and finicky to use.

As someone with wet ear wax I feel like they get itchy and uncomfortable after long (1 hour+) use.

They definitely soften the sharpness of sound and noise but I personally expected more and prefer using my AirPods turned off as the right amount of noise softening.

These are a good send.

I swear by flare calmers due to having Autism and ADHD, they help me massively whilst at work. And the inbuilt lanyard is an added bonus in case of me having an epileptic seizure, so I don't lose either or both of them.

Met expectations

They work which is great, they don't distort sound but they do soften it, in a way. However they are quite uncomfortable to wear for more than an hour. The little pocket they come with and the recyclable packaging is appreciated

Early days, yet

I hope to update this review at a later time, as i just received my mini calmers yesterday.
First, I chose the nude colour for invisibility. Seems like a good idea. Until you lose one. I did find it, hours later. By feel, not sight. So, next time i would order a brighter colour. To remedy this i have tied a light embroidery floss thread to them. This seems to work just fine. And it can be removed. I did not buy the connected Calmers, because just looking at them i could tell they stuck out and would be irritating. Comments in reviews confirmed my suspicion.
Next, these are very comfortable. You forget they are there. Which is why i lost one, probably rubbing my ear. Maybe a standard sized one would fit me and stay put? I could only choose one atm, and my music earbuds always need to be the smallest size, so i based my decision on that. I will say, the mini goes very far into the ear and only Inspector Gadget would notice it. The photos of the standard size seem to show it being quite visible outside the ear canal.
Lastly, do they work as intended? That one i will need more time to understand. I live a rural life. Sharp sounds do bother me a lot. I bring ear plugs with me even for driving the car. I will be interested if they help me with that, and otger noisy environments. I shall post an addendum, if possible, later on.
I bought ear plugs from this company when they were just a start-up, years ago. Good quality, always.

I suffer with Misophonia, and these have changed my life!

I suffer with Misophonia, and there are A LOT of sounds that trigger it. Working Retail, I am exposed to all sorts of background noises that distract, as well as being right beside the loud nose hair breathers, gum smackers, loud chewers, and just people who make weird sounds in general... all these annoying sounds send my brain into a negative spiral and my irritability explodes, and I want to run and scream "Shut up!" like a toddler, and I'm in my 50's. Wearing these has made the sounds tolerable. My rage is calmed down and I'm able to focus on helping the customer, and not be so distracted by my flight reaction. I can get through my day much less stressed out and focus on conversations in front of me while these drown out the excess noises. They are not a cure all, but my goodness the difference they make is remarkable.

Amazing product for autism and sound sensitivity

I am 42 years old, female, have autism and various sensory sensitivities, one of which is sound. Some sounds I find physically painful, and others just push me over the edge and makes me very irritated. I have trouble focusing on one person when there is a lot going on around me, like in a coffee shop, and I sometimes have trouble reading because of the washing machine, tv, clock or cars outside.
I purchased the Calmer mini and have been wearing them for the past 4 days away on holiday. They have made an instant difference. I can't exactly hear a huge difference except when I listen to my Spotify playlist (some songs sound a little different), but the change in my comfort level overall is HUGE. I don't know what witchery this is, but it works. Even my husband commented on how much more relaxed I was during the trip. I participated in all the activities and seemed much "nicer".
My experience was that I could still hear everything clear as day, however no sounds hurt. I could focus on the person talking to me in a loud crowded coffee shop and even noticed a difference reading my very complicated textbook. I took them out before bed and wanted to read in bed, but after reading the same page 3 times, I put them back in and it instantly improved my focus.
I love how soft and comfortable they are. I completely forget they are in there sometimes. I ordered the nude color, and they are barely noticeable. I ordered 3 more sets - one of them for my son, who now won't give mine back because he loves them so much - and two for me because I can't imagine losing one and going back to the noisy world without them.
Thank you to the brilliant mind who invented these. I would love more info around the science behind it and why it works so well.
5+ stars.

Poor quality meshbag and useless product

Hardly any effect audible, definitely nit helping me sleep. Also the black mesh bag sheds mini plastic hair onto the earbuds, which then end up in your ear canal. No thank you, I don’t need microplastics in my ears! Potentially dangerous.

Worth the investment

Picked up the Calmer with Filter pack, colour Nude, size Standard

I wouldn’t buy without the filter pack

I wouldn’t advise anyone this as it’s your ear canal, but I did get a phone call and put my Bluetooth headphone in my ear on impulse, it was completely fine

Small ears rejoice!!

I recommend these to anyone who gets stressed and / or overstimulated by surrounding noise. I got the Calmer in size Mini and they fit and stay great in my ears. I have a hard time finding earplugs or earphones that fit, but the mini are just great.
It took me a while to really understand how my calmer plugs were helping me. Now, I feel an immediate physical relief when I put them on. Putting them in *before* heading somewhere loud or very social really reduces the amount of fatigue I get and helps me better focus on conversations. Highly recommend!!!
I’ve had mine for at least two years and they are still in great condition. They’re also discreet in the ear and comfortable

Received a pair as a birthday gift

Received a pair as a birthday gift while in a busy and noisy restaurant. I was really hoping for the experience as described - to be able to have conversations at my table but filter out the jarring noise of the the other voices in the restaurant. I received the buds with the inserts - they did zero noise filtering and just added to my discomfort by making my ears feel full.

I bought the original harder silicone Calmers

I bought the original harder silicone Calmers in standard size. I find one difficult to fit and it just wouldn’t go into my ear canal. The other needed a lot of persuasion but I got it in eventually. I figured that I must have small ear canals so have since ordered the newer softer silicone combo pack to see if this helps with fit. The harder silicone left my ears feeling bruised so I have left them out for a couple of days while I wait for the soft ones to arrive. Of note. Even though the one I could get in was a tight fit, it was actually really comfortable when it was in situ. I even forgot it was in there!

Despite the difficulties with getting the right fit, I did find that that my hyperacusis was improved. I’m really hopeful for a better fit when the soft combo pack arrives… this could be the start of life without auditory pain!! 🙏🏻

Perhaps an extra size (slightly larger) would work best

I have been using it only for a few days. It blocks the sound to the point where you can hear yourself talking or chewing, and it lowers the irritation caused by traffic, loud voices etc. I am still trying to figure out how to wear them properly, as for some reason it only fits well to my left ear but not on the right, and therefore does not provide equal / balanced isolation which can be very annoying to me. Perhaps an extra size (slightly larger) would work best (I got the standard size + filters).

Calmer Softs

I bought Calmer Softs a year ago, and I've been using them every workday since. The first time I put them in, I teared up because the old air conditioner in my living room rattles in a way that makes me anxious and hurts my ears, and with the Calmers in, for the first time, I could sit in the living room with my family without pain. They truly do take the edge off of living in a noisy and uncomfortable world! Looking forward to trying out other Flare products soon!

Our Story

The very first Flare products came to life at our first Flare HQ – a garage in our founders garden. As a small team of three we designed and built our first loudspeakers and provided PA for gigs and festivals.

It wasn’t long before we ran out of space...
