Calmer® is a unique ear tool that reduces our stress response to noise without blocking or muffling sound. Designed to be worn comfortably in the ear for long periods of time, Calmer maximises brain function and minimises distractions.

Calmer is for anyone who wants to reduce stress caused by everyday noise. Noise-sensitive people often notice the effect immediately, whereas others may need to wear Calmer for 5-10 minutes in a noisy setting and then remove them to appreciate the stress reduction that Calmer is delivering.

Calmer is a hollow, soft silicone, ear tool that reduces ear resonance. It’s not a traditional earplug and it doesn’t block or muffle sound which means you don’t experience the occlusion effect that is common with all other earplugs. Calmer fits discreetly inside the ear and can be worn for long periods of time to improve wellbeing.

Calmer allows you to communicate perfectly and is designed to become part of your everyday routine. Wear Calmer just before you enter a noisy space and keep it in your ears until you leave so that you minimise your stress response. Typical places to wear Calmer include... Busy Places, Public Transport, Noisy offices, Schools, Hospitals, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes, Shops and more.

Calmer alters the internal shape of our ears to reduce ear resonance at frequencies between 2-8 kHz. They feature a flat surface inside a hollow soft silicone design to improve how sound reflects inside our ears. This helps reduce stress from sound with no volume reduction or muffling - just a calmer way of hearing.

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), environmental noise is the second biggest killer after air pollution. They highlight that just a 10dB increase in daily traffic noise exposure leads to a significant increase in heart attack, obesity and stroke because it creates additional stress on our bodies due to the increased release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Following 2 decades of research in sound and hearing, we have discovered that noise is not the only problem - the shape of our ears also has a significant impact. Our ears are shell-like shapes that have evolved to increase stress response to sound by resonating sound at frequencies between 2kHz – 8kHz. This resonance triggers the release of cortisol. Whilst the effects of HRTF have been known and studied for some time, we are the first to realise that our ear shape plays a role in the release of cortisol and have developed unique technology to address the issue.

AMAZED

I spend my workday in a room with eight toddlers, the noise overwhelms me incredibly. My co worker was AMAZED today at how calm I was with these in! (Pun intended).

I can honestly say they help me a lot

"I can honestly say they help me a lot in classrooms, assemblies, out and about and in noisy places. They lessen the harsh noises and enable me to focus on the things I want to hear, like holding a conversation.”

I use mine at work

"I use mine at work. Takes the harshness from the office noise, can still talk and hear conversations and be on the phone."

Calmer® FAQs

    • You need Calmer if you want to reduce your stress response to everyday noise without blocking or muffling sound.
    • You need Calmer Extra if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased sound reduction and gentle volume attenuation.
    • You need Calmer Pro if you want all the benefits of Calmer but with increased stress reduction thanks to its aluminium core wrapped in soft silicon.
    • You need Calmer Kids if you want all the benefits of Calmer, but they are for a child aged 5 to 12.
  • Calmer is designed to reduce distortion caused by the shape of the ear by using a tiny waveguide to reflect sound more accurately into the ear. This reduces the impact of harsh and stress-inducing frequencies without blocking or muffling sound.

By lowering the stress response to everyday noise, many people find sound feels more comfortable and less overwhelming, particularly in busy or noisy environments. Some customers with tinnitus choose to use Calmer for this reason.

However, we do not recommend using Calmer solely to help with tinnitus or ringing in the ears. Calmer is designed to improve comfort around sound and reduce noise related stress, rather than target tinnitus itself.

  • Calmer sits at the entrance of the ear canal and does not go deep into the ear. For the best fit and performance, follow our step-by-step visual fitting guide.

  • Calmer has been independently tested by The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at Southampton University. Read their full report here:

Our Story

The very first Flare products came to life at our first Flare HQ – a garage in our founders garden. As a small team of three we designed and built our first loudspeakers and provided PA for gigs and festivals.

It wasn’t long before we ran out of space...
